The Bellwood Quarry – Atlanta Georgia

A couple of weeks ago I was given the opportunity through the Trust for Public Land to go and photograph the Bellwood Quarry on the west side of Atlanta. The Bellwood Quarry is part of Westside Park, a new City of Atlanta park that will be 351 acres along with a 45 acre lake once the Quarry is filled up.  This will be the biggest park in the city of Atlanta.  The Quarry will also serve a drinking water reservoir for the city of Atlanta.  Westside Park is part of the Atlanta Beltline Project.

Buckhead Lenox Road Skyline

We were leaving Phipps Plaza on Friday night after stocking up on winter clothes at Belk and I got a couple of pictures of the skyline looking west over Lenox Road.  There are a lot of great perspectives from Phipps Plaza of nearby Buckhead high rise buildings.  Here is how they were shot:

Nikon D800, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8
ISO 500, 14mm, f/5.6
5 frames 1/10-1/160 sec
Processed in Photomatix Pro and Lightroom

The Georgia Dome – Home of the Atlanta Falcons

I got this HDR shot today of the Georgia Dome where the Atlanta Falcons will be playing the San Francisco 49’ers this Sunday in the 2013 NFC Championship Game.  I am so pumped for this game and hope the Falcons can earn their ticket to the Super Bowl in New Orleans.  I’ll be there and hope you will too!

Beautiful Atlanta Sky From Phipps Plaza

I have tried to capture this shot before and was stopped by security.  This time I stayed in my car and was able to get the image I was looking for.  The clouds and sky were pretty amazing for about 3 minutes, then it was gone…  This is a 3 exposure HDR processed in SNS-HDR Pro and Lightroom.  The Church on the left is Wieuca Baptist Church and the building on the right is the Ritz Carlton Residences.

Midtown Atlanta Skyline over Piedmont Park’s Lake Clara Meer

I have been taking the 103 class at Showcase here in Atlanta and as part of the class we had an ongoing project that was due at the end.  My project was on the bodies of water in Atlanta.  This was the final picture I took, and it is in Piedmont Park overlooking Lake Clara Meer with the Midtown Atlanta skyline in the background.  This is 9 images combined using SNS-HDR.  I think it turned out pretty well.  My teachers critique was that my black point was too high and by reducing it I may be able to bring out more details near the base of the trees in the distance.  Having said that I’m not sure I would change it.  I like the richness of the image and can live with the darks.  Your thoughts are always welcome.

City of Atlanta Skyline Fogged Over

This morning the fog was thick in Atlanta, and even at 9:30 am it was still hanging low.  I was on my way to Decatur on Freedom Parkway and saw the City was still engulfed so I jumped over to the Jackson Street Bridge and caught this shot.  You can view what it typically looks like here http://picturesofatlanta.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/hdr-atlanta-skyline/

City of Atlanta Skyline SNS HDR

The picture above was processed using SNS-HDR.  I also use Photomatix a lot to process HDR shots, and here is what it came out looking like.  I’d be interested to hear which one you prefer.  I like the one out of SNS better, it just feels cleaner to me.  Let me know what you think.

Atlanta Falcons Defeat the Carolina Panthers 30-28

Today the Atlanta Falcons moved to 4-0 on the season with a win over Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.  We were lucky to be sitting in a suite hosted by 790 the Zone and Star 94.  I got a few pictures, one wide angle HDR shot of the dome, a couple of field goals including the winning field goal with 10 seconds remaining in the game.

The Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta Hotel

I love the fountain in the motor court of the Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta Hotel.  It changes colors from pink, purple, red and green.  With cars going in and out the light stream made for a fun photo.  This was processed in Photomatix using 3 exposures ranging from 13-30 seconds.  View this photo and more Pictures of Atlanta at www.CarsonMatthewsPhotography.com/PicturesofAtlanta
